The short answer is no that keyword density is not important for articles. But, please let me explain my answer to that question so that you fully understand what I mean when I say it’s not important.
Everyone is looking for an edge over their competition. I am sure you would love to discover one little secret that would put you one step ahead of your competitors even if it was a small one. That is kind of where keyword density comes into play.
Some people think that you can get an edge over your competition by having some kind of ideal keyword density in your articles. I don’t believe this to be true in the case of article marketing. If your primary purpose for your article is to get a link back to your website, then the keyword density of your article really should not matter at all. It would probably be smart to include the keyword somewhere in the article at least once. It would probably be smart to include the keyword in the page title if possible. Aside from those cases it should not matter much.
The thing you do need to watch out for with keyword density is overdoing it. For instance, EzineArticles.com measures the keyword density of your articles to determine if they think you are writing spammy articles. That system fails though. I have had articles flagged for being too keyword dense even though the entire article was written from scratch using my brain while never once considering how many times the keyword was used. In other words, the article was one hundred percent natural and they still flagged it for being too dense.
In my own personal opinion, I think that people make way too much over keyword density. As long as your articles are written using natural language, then you should not need to worry about something like theat.
Keyword density does serve some important functions. It might help increase your relevancy score a little bit for a web page that you are trying to get ranked well either on an article directory or on your own website. If the ranking of that article matters to you then keyword density should be a small consideration. Make sure you are not overdoing it so that your article gets caught by spam filters. At the same time you do want to make sure that your article does have the primary keyword in it.
I would not spend much time worrying about keyword density though if I was you. Here is what Matt Cutts has to say about the subject.
