Maybe you have thought of doing this before or maybe you have even tried it. You setup a website to receive articles just like an article directory does. Then you sign up to receive free content for it from a service like Unique Article Wizard or Article Marketing Automation or some other one. You pick whatever categories you want to receive articles for. Before you know it, you start getting a flood of semi-unique content that you can publish on your site. Is it really worthwhile doing this? Can you really make money doing it?
Can you make money doing this?
The short answer is yes, but it is not quite as easy as it sounds. You would hope that you would be able to do all of this completely on autopilot. Unfortunately that is not the case, at least not in my experience.
One of the main problems with getting your content from services like that is that you are going to get really low quality articles. Think about it. The people who are submitting articles using programs like that are not interested in producing quality. They are interested in only one thing, the link. All they want is that link or two back to their website or some other page that exists somewhere that links back to their website.
Because of this severe lack of quality in the articles, if you actually want the article to be readable by a human visitor, you will find that you have to spend time manually editing almost every single one. In my opinion, editing the articles is even more boring than just writing one from scratch yourself. Yes the editing will take a little bit less time than writing a new one. I think you will find that it takes too long though. I guess it depends on what your goals are with the website. If you want the website to get rankings and traffic, then you will probably be doing a lot of editing, an awful lot.
That kind of site isn’t going to get any natural backlinks. You will have to build them all yourself. You might get a few here and there from smarter article marketers who backlink the articles you publish for them. I promise you that the amount of people who are ambitious enough to do that is a really, really small percentage. The people who use those services are too lazy to do that. That is why they are using those services in the first place.
So, this kind of site is going to take a lot of work on your part, probably far more than you think. And you have to do a lot of work if you want to keep the quality at a reasonable level. If you don’t take the time to keep the quality reasonable, then your site is sure to get whacked by the Google Panda filter. That will happen because some of the articles being published won’t be unique enough to pass the duplicate content check.
Maybe you were thinking you could just set up a bunch of these and monetize them with some pay per click ads. Good luck with that. I guess if you are persistent enough anything is possible. I think you will find that it is too much work and very unrewarding financially. Maybe you know of a more creative way to monetize a site like that.
Are these sites even worthwhile then?
I guess if you were creative with the monetization, then maybe yes. Or, maybe you aren’t using the site to monetize anything but rather using it to keep other links indexed or for some other purpose. You will find it very challenging to build up Google PageRank for that kind of website. That is unless you already have access to other places to get it easily or unless you plan on spamming. Most people aren’t going to willingly link to a site like that. It is hard to hide that site’s true colors. If you try to manually build links to it from other sites you will find people removing your links once they realize what they have linked to.
If you don’t believe me then try it for yourself. You will see what I mean. Those distribution services pump out insane amounts of article garbage. Invent a system for turning that garbage into serviceable content or else invent a system for sorting the garbage from the semi-decent stuff more easily. Then you will have something worthwhile.
