There is a really sneaky shortcut that people can use to get their websites to rank higher that most people never think about. Once you realize it, you can bet that you are going to start doing it. That little secret is the process of building out your website to make it much larger than it already is. That might not sound like much of a secret, but it is. If you build out the site properly, then for each new page you add to your website you will be decreasing the amount of external website links you need to acquire in order for your website to have more ranking power.
If your website has a good amount of domain authority, then getting individual pages to rank well becomes much easier. At that point, when you are trying to get a particular web page to rank well, you can usually accomplish that by getting several really powerful links pointing to that page using the ideal anchor text that you want that page to rank for. One of those really powerful links can be a link from your own website. On most websites the page with the most link juice to give away is going to be the homepage. The more links your homepage has pointing at it, the more juice it is going to have to deliver to those pages that you want to rank really well.
You can substantially increase the amount of ranking power that homepage can deliver if you add new pages to your site and make sure that every one of those new pages links back to your homepage. As long as each of those new pages gets indexed in Google, then those new pages are going to juice up your homepage.
An easy way to add new pages to your website is to create a new folder on your site and add a blog to it. Send some link juice from an external source directly to the blog. Setup some kind of linking system to get at least one link to every new page you add to your blog. Make sure every new page on your blog contains a link that points back to your homepage or to whatever page you want to get ranked higher on your website.
After you have been in this business for a while and you study enough competitive situations then you will realize how much power sites can build up internally. You will start to notice that some pages are ranking well because they have a link back from a really powerful page on their own website.
If you have never experimented with this before, then now would be a good time. Pick out an internal page on your website that you would like to get ranked better. Create a link to that page from your homepage using the ideal anchor text phrase that you would like that page to rank higher for. You will see what I mean. Once you realize that it works, you will want to add more link juice to your homepage so that it works even better.
