There are level one, level two and level three links. Any link that you could possibly get for your website could be categorized into one of those categories. The level one links are the least powerful. The level three links are the most powerful. Let’s take a look at each level so that you get a clearer picture of what we are talking about.
Level 1 Links
Level one links are good for getting pages indexed in the search engines. They tend to come from sites that would be easy for someone to get links from. Twitter links would be a good example of level one links. Any links from social media sites, for the most part, would be considered level one links. There are some exceptions. These links may or may not have relevant anchor text for your page. Level one links don’t necessarily have to be low Google PageRank links. They could be high Google PageRank links that don’t last long. For example, you could get a high PR link from the homepage of a major social network site. If that link doesn’t last for more than a few hours, then you really couldn’t put that much weight behind it. Those links tend to move down off of that site’s homepage as they are constantly being replaced by newer links.
Level 2 Links
Level 2 links are links that require a little more work to get. They last for long periods of time and often times use good relevant anchor text when linking to your page. The only problem with level two links is that on an individual basis they do not pack much rank boosting power. Links from articles directories or articles from blogs that belong to a blog network would be considered level two links. They will give your website and your individual web pages some ranking boost, but not enough for you to dominate a competitive keyword competition.
Level 3 Links
Level three links are the really good links that carry a lot of rank boosting power. You can usually notice an improvement in your website ranking with every one of these links that you get depending of course on how competitive your situation is. These are the high Google PageRank links that stick for months or years. These are the links from the three hundred dollar Yahoo business directory. These are the links you have to pay big money for if you decide to purchase them from a link broker. Harder keyword competitions are won by he who has the most powerful link pointing to their page. Level three links come from trusted authoritative sources.
When you analyze the link profiles of websites that rank well for moderately competitive and higher levels of competition you notice that they have a mix of all three of these types of links. Those sites tend to get lots of level one and level two links but much fewer level three links. Of course this makes sense as there are a lot fewer level three links out there and they are much more difficult to acquire. When you think about links using these terms it makes it easier to decide what is worth your time and what is not.
